On Monday, May 28th, in celebration of Memorial Day, the Rockland Buffalo Soldiers will hold an honorable veteran service within Mount Moor Historical Cemetery. The cemetery may be accessible by F-Lot at Palisades Center, near Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The Buffalo Soldiers is a label first given to members of African-American cavalry regiments of the U.S. Army who served in the western United States from 1867 to 1896, noted for their courage and discipline. Today, there are numerous chapters around the United States, including the Rockland Buffalo Soldiers based out of Spring Valley, New York.
Mount Moor Cemetery, preserved by the Historical Society of Rockland County, states “[T]his “Burying ground for Colored People” was deeded on July 7th, 1849 by James Benson and Jane Benson, his wife, to William H. Moore, Stephen Samuels and Isaac Williams, trustees. The cemetery has provided burial space for colored people, including veterans of the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Korean War. The grounds have been maintained since 1940 by the Mount Moor Cemetery Association, Inc.”
