Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble

The Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble (under the direction of jazz educator, composer, arranger, saxophonist, Peter Furlan) provides a chance for serious young musicians to collaborate with their peers from other schools, plus learn from guest artists involved in the jazz world. The Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble has been created to fill an important and necessary niche in the local jazz education community and to help promote this truly great American art form. The Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble has been created in this spirit of cooperation, with musicians sharing their knowledge and love of jazz.

This performance will also feature guest trombonist Erick Storckman.

Soren Song

Soren Song (they/them) is a singer/songwriter from New York. Over the past few decades they have gained a reputation as a performer who taps into the human experience and takes their listeners through the highs and lows in a way that few others do. There is no difference between the performer and the performance. When you listen to Soren you get all of them – in whatever way it happens to come out. They seem to channel directly from a magical world – a place where songs and symbols and ideas are substance and the physical is a dream.

Chiku Awali African Dance, Music & Culture

West African dance tells a story. Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts & Culture, Inc. performs and teaches dances such as Lamba and Funga, which are dances of welcome. KouKou and Gundi are celebration dances for a good fishing catch. The dance Sounou, shows off dancing ability and beauty; and Soli, Kassa, and Sinte, are dances about the coming of age. In all African cultures, dances are participatory. Children will perform the dances Sounou and Sinte; and teens and adults will perform Lamban and Gbegbe. At the event, Yahaya Kamate, Chiku Awali dance instructor and Gabriel Roxbury, drummer, will encourage the shopping audience to stop their hustle and bustle to participate in one of these traditional West African dances.
