On July 20, 2018, A Taste of Turkey opened at Palisades Center. Located on Level 1, A Taste of Turkey sells handmade and hand-painted Turkish art pieces. From ceramic bowls and mosaic lamps, to jewelry and hookahs, A Taste of Turkey has an assortment of colorful and detailed items for your home.
Oscar Ata, owner and operator, and his wife Anna, have run the business for 8 years. Oscar frequently travels up and down the east coast attending street and art fairs. A Taste of Turkey has participated in the Nyack Street Fair on numerous occasions. The two are excited to have a physical store in the area.
“We wanted to come to Palisades Center because we have such unique items to share. There’s a personal connection as well with our store and products, since Oscar is Turkish,” Anna Ata said.
Turkish ceramics originated in Iznik and can be traced as far back as the Uygurs of the 8th and 9th centuries. Prior to the 17th century, the traditional designs included plant motifs, arabesques and Chinese clouds. Later there was a shift towards a more naturalistic style in which tulips, carnations, hyacinths, roses, spring blooms, lilies, cypress trees and clusters of grapes and vine leaves appeared.
Every product’s art is significant in Turkish culture. For example, Carnations symbolize intermingling of earthly and heavenly gardens of paradise and roses always look up so its glory can be seen by God while also symbolizing love.
